He had non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She had Hodgkin lymphoma. They thought their fates were sealed…
Robert and Joanne Forster were told they would never have children after both of them were diagnosed with cancer.
34-year-old Robert was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2006 before he met Joanne, and 2 years later, his wifereceived the heartbreaking news that she had Hodgkin lymphoma.
Robert was forced to give up a successful boxing career after his diagnosis nearly a decade ago, and Joanne was forced to accept that bearing children would probably never be in the cards for her.
Doctors strongly encouraged the couple to freeze their eggs and sperm, but they didn’t have the chance before their chemo treatments started.
Robert and Joanne defeatedly acceptedthe reality that they would never be able to start a family of their own. The odds of conceiving after the damaging effects of chemo on your reproductive system are incredibly slim.
So when the couple found out that they were expecting a child, they could hardly believe their ears! They were sure it must be a mistake.
“I didn’t believe it at first, I thought it was a wind-up after we both had cancer,” said Robert. “Joanne text me and said she thought I needed to come home from work. I went home and she was there with a pregnancy test in her hand.”
“What has happened is really amazing. It really is a bit of a Christmas miracle for us,” he added.
And it literally was.
The babywasn’t expected to arrive for 9 more days, but the timing couldn’t have been any better.
At 7 lbs 11oz, Henry Forster came kicking and screaming into this world at 1:20am on Christmas Day, blessing his parents with the best Christmas present ever: a happy, healthy baby boy.
“I never thought this day would come,” said Joanne.
“The fact he was born on Christmas Day, after we’d been told we would not be able to have children, just makes it that little bit more special.”
Henry truly was a God-send, and now he even gets to share Jesus’ birthday!
