Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are opening up about their relationship, and we are learning SO MUCH!
Will came on Jada’s Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk to squash all the rumors and let everyone know the whole truth about their relationship.
Jada decided to “start with day one” — which already had its own surprises! She recalled her first meeting with her future husband clearly:
“The first time I met you was at the Fresh Prince when I came to audition. I think I was 19. They told me I was too short. But you were there.”
Then Will revealed he knew all about her even before that!
“You were on A Different World, and Alfonso knew everybody and I remember the first time I saw you–“
But that’s when Jada interrupted and dropped a bomb on all ’90s kids.
1. JADA DATED CARLTON
Before she became Mrs. Fresh Prince, Jada went out with Carlton, aka Alfonso Ribeiro!
“I actually think I dated Alfonso.”
“You went on a date with Alfonso, yes.”
It apparently didn’t go well, as he “took you on a motorcycle or something” as Will recalls.
Man, Carlton was too wild for Jada! Cue the Tom Jones music!
The point was, as Will ends that talk right away, that Alfonso knew her. He says he told his costar immediately:
“‘Dude, I saw this girl on Different World last night. Her name is Jada.’ He was like, ‘Yeah yeah, my boy knows her. He can introduce you.’”
But the course of true love ne’er did run smooth (which is either Shakespeare or the full version of the Fresh Prince theme).
When Will went to the set of A Different World to get introduced to Jada, he met another woman first — and ended up marrying her!
“We had all these near misses and every time we saw each other, it was always a beautiful energy… It was a really unique, beautiful power. We had that moment. We connected, but I was married and it was… that was it.”
Jada takes this moment to set the record straight about another rumor.
2. WILL DID NOT CHEAT WITH JADA
The couple only began their relationship after the divorce papers were signed — but it did begin RIGHT after. Jada says:
“We did not have an affair while he was married, let’s be clear about that.”
But it did tell Will he had gone wrong:
“The next night me and Sheree went to dinner, and I sat down with Sheree, and it was one of the most bizarre emotions I ever had… I remember I had to get up from dinner when I had a realization that I wasn’t with the person I was supposed to be with… I went in the bathroom at the Palm, and I broke down in tears. And I was sitting in a stall in the restaurant and I was crying uncontrollably and then laughing, like what is wrong with me, and it’s like I knew that was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced. I don’t get divorced… and then Sheree filed for divorce.”
Huh. Maybe she just knew too?? Will continues:
“I remember I was like going to sign the divorce papers, and I walked out of there and I was in the car, and I had Jada’s number. I literally walked right out from there, I called Jada.”
Jada had decided she was not going to live in Hollywood and had already left the business and bought a house in Baltimore.
“I said ‘Hey Jada, what’s up? It’s Will.’ She said ‘Hey, you doing?’ I said, ‘Good, are you seeing anybody?’ She said, ‘Uh, no.’ I said ‘Cool, you’re seeing me now.’”
Jada, looking back on how bad that line was, shrugs:
“And my dumb ass was like, ‘OK.’”
The next hurdle their relationship went through is pretty hard to swallow.
3. THE SMITHS WENT 20 YEARS WITHOUT USING PROFANITY
Will describes a party in which Jada told him to “shut the f**k up” after which he laid down the law:
“I said, ‘Jada, this is the deal. I grew up in a household where I watched my father punch my mother in the face. And I will not create a house, a space, and interaction with a person where there is profanity and violence. If you have to talk to me like that we can’t be together. We are not gonna use any profanity in our interactions, we are not gonna raise our voice, we are not gonna be violent. I can’t do it.”
And after some reluctance, Jada agreed. Will says:
“It was 20 years before we used profanity in any conversation that we had. We never used profanity in any argument, we never raised our voices, we took communication courses, all of that.”
“We couldn’t afford to. It could get ugly.”
